You’re all ready to celebrate Halloween with your dog. There’s just one problem: you don’t have a costume. Here is a homemade, simple superhero dog costume for you to make. Before you begin, make sure your dog is the type who will wear costumes. Never force your pet to wear something, if he or she doesn’t want to. That having been said, this costume is very simple and is something most dogs will agree to wear. It consists of two parts: a cape and two leg bands. You might opt to omit the leg bands and just do the cape, and you’ll still get a funny, believable costume. You’ll need some fabric. I chose fleece because it’s easy to work with, sturdy, and you do not need to finish off the edges. Unlike most other fabrics, when you cut it, the edges won’t start to unravel. You can just cut the fabric and use it as is. I had pieced leftover from two thrift store jackets that I bought cheaply. If you keep your eye out for bargains year round, you will have a nice selection of stuff to work with when you need something to complete a project. In [...]

If you are having a party with children, you’ll need a menu that not only sticks to the holiday theme, but one that they will eat. Here are some ideas for Halloween food for kids parties. Make dishes that are scary, gross, or related to Halloween characters, such as witches, bats, vampires, and mummies. But you need to be sure it’s not so gross that the kids won’t eat it. If it looks too much like the real thing, and they don’t know what it really is, they are unlikely to try it. So it’s better to stick with cuter, rather than scarier, items. This depends on the age of the children, of course. Very young children, and tweens, will eat almost anything. But when you get to the age where seeing is believing, and logic doesn’t make much sense, you can get into trouble. Stay away from bloody dishes that truly resemble blood. And skip the fake poops. The kids won’t eat the cat litter cake, if it looks like cat litter and turds, even if you tell them it’s crushed cookies and chocolate candies. So what can you serve? Think of things that are slightly spooky but not [...]

Looking for gross party food ideas? Here are some for inspiration. You can use your favorite recipes and change the names, or start a special collection. I love Halloween! It’s the one time of year when your imagination and your mind play tricks on you. Believing becomes more important than seeing, and what you see is not always what you get. Use this feeling of trickery to your advantage with food. For your holiday get together or Halloween party, here are five appetizers to gross out your guests. Think scary, spooky, slimy, and yucky. Think body parts, fluids, bugs, and bogs. Think dark, secluded woods full of slinking creatures, cemeteries full of shadows, and something out of the corner of your eye. Now put those feelings into your food. Keep the mood going as you concoct. Start with blood. Make some kind of a red dip. You can use pizza sauce with cheese, a beet dip, or something made from raspberries or strawberries, like a jam. Call it something like Bloody Dip. Think of a creative name for the dippers. Call bread sticks Witch Fingers, or carrot sticks Zombie Fingers. Use pita chips and call them Mummified Skin Flakes. Add [...]

What kind of holiday would it be if your food was boring? Halloween party stuff isn’t complete until you add spooky food. Find vegetarian and vegan Halloween food ideas here. This is the one holiday where your imagination can run wild. In addition to making food taste good, you get to make it look gross, too. Here are five disgusting desserts for your next Halloween party or get-together. 1. Slasher Cake The idea behind this is a violent killer with a knife. Use any kind of cake you like, in any flavor. You’ll need to frost the top with a light colored frosting. Using a tube of red gel icing, or some royal icing colored red, create lines and pools of “blood.” If you have a severed body part prop, this gets even more gross. Put the hand, foot, finger, or eyeball on top the cake, with a pool of blood icing around the cut area. For a final sickly touch, have a large knife nearby. Put red icing along the blade and in several spots on the handle, to look like bloody fingerprints. 2. Graveyard Cake This is fun for kids to help you with. You can be as [...]

They had draped the thing in black fabric, so it looked like it was wearing a cloak and hood, with the face visible and talking. Really creepy! You could use one of the props below at your party, for a similar effect.
If you want to stay away from all the processed candy this Halloween, you might consider making your own goodies. By doing so, you can control what goes into them, so you will feel better about you and your kids eating them. Healthy Halloween treats is not an oxymoron! When you think of Halloween, the first edible thing that comes to mind is probably candy, followed by candied apples. You can still have Halloween treats that taste good but are better for you and your family. Here’s how to make them healthier. The basic idea behind healthy-fying something is to increase the good stuff and reduce the not-so-good stuff. In other words, add nutritional value and remove processed products and those with a long list of chemical ingredients. Start with the colorings Can you remove the coloring altogether without sacrificing the product? Can you substitute something natural to get a similar result? Rather than adding red food coloring to a dip, for example, can you make it with beets instead? Can you make those lollipops clear instead of colored? If you have never made your own lollipops, consider doing so this year. You can use organic sugar and a natural, [...]

Halloween Books for Kids Oscar the wiener dog has to wear his hot dog costume for Halloween, but his buddies tease him about it. Kids will enjoy the cute cartoon illustrations and what happens to Oscar in this book. This follows the same format as the Night Before Christmas, but the kids here are preparing for Halloween instead. A rhyming favorite with kids that has ghosts, goblins, and other scary creatures marching past. Kids love the cute pictures and rhymes. Parents love the mild manner and positive messages of generosity and sharing. Familiar fairy tale characters come together for a Halloween party in this book that not only rhymes, but has a hip hop rhythm to it, also. A real kid pleaser.
Sponsor a vampire bat and provide bedding and furniture for them Halloween is full of vampires, and vampire bats, who change from one to the other. They hang from the ceiling and sleep during the day, sucking blood from their human victims at night. Right? Or not? Here are the facts about those bloodsucking Halloween bats. You might be surprised to discover where the legends end and the truth begins. They are bloodsuckers They are indeed the only mammals that feed entirely on blood. But they don’t in fact suck on blood. Instead, they make an incision with their razor-sharp teeth, then lick the blood from their victims. An anticoagulant chemical in their saliva keeps the blood from clotting. They have fewer teeth than most bats, because they don’t need to chew their food. They feed on humans Vampire bats do every now and then bite humans, but their main food source is animal in nature. They tend to prey on cows, deer, goats, chickens, and other small creatures. They have a heat sensor on their nose. They approach a potential meal on the ground, crawling, and usually bite an area where blood is flowing near to the surface. Commonly [...]

Sponser Gandolf, the Egyptian fruit bat Everyone who thinks of Halloween thinks of bats. And no party would be complete without them. Click for Halloween bat decorations. But what about the real deal, the animals that inspire the spooky image? Are they really blood-sucking terrors? Here are some bat facts that might scare you…or at least, surprise you. There are 1,105 species of bats all over the world. In fact, there are so many, they make up about one quarter of all mammal species. In fact, bats are the only mammals that can fly. Other “flying” mammals, such as flying squirrels, really only glide. Bats’ wings have the same structure as our human hands do. They have four fingers and a small thumb. The fingers have webbing between them, and the thumb has a nail on it and is used for grooming and holding food. Bats are useful for insect control and plant fertilization. One bat can devour 600 to 1,000 insects per hour! Most bats eat fruits, insects, or other small prey items, such as lizards and bugs. Most bats in North America eat insects. They help keep the population of pest species under control. For example, they eat [...]
